Google Android Platform - The Android Log

Dave Burke, an engineering manager within Google’s mobile team, stood up today at the Future of Mobile conference in London to talk about Android and the Open Handset Alliance (OHA), the new open mobile platform initiative from Google. This is the the first conference presentation in Europe on the subject since Google’s announcement on November 5th, and was live blogged by TechCrunch UK.

But if you were expecting much new information on all this you would probably have been disappointed. Burke introduce the OHA, outlined how it has 30+ industry leaders on board and how there is no gPhone, just a phone built by partners using the Android platform - this we already know. There was a run-down of what the platform will be capable of and a reminder that the SDK is a only a few days old and that we will probably not see handsets until the second half of next year when the full open source platform will be released.

He also did a fairly impressive demonstration of coding an application (in this case a mobile browser) inside 8mins (or 7mins 58 seconds to be exact - he timed it on stage).

Digg founder says: Mobile Web is Next

Still looking for reasons to port your mobile application to the Android platform? This was found at www.siliconrepublic.com.

“We are on the verge of mobile application explosion,” Kevin Rose, founder of social news site Digg.com, tells siliconrepublic.com, and he credits devices like the iPhone for bringing a “true, full-featured computing experience to a small handheld device”.

Rose’s site www.digg.com was one of the first to create an iPhone-friendly version but he says that though mobile devices are the next big trend it is the internet that is driving changes in how people are accessing information with innovations like search, RSS (Really Simple Syndication), blogs and social networking as major catalysts.

“The tollbooths of information are being torn down: the cost of creating and distributing content is now so low that anyone can produce content and blast it out to the world.

“And you can access just about any type of content anywhere, so content is abundant and accessible.”

He says that the challenge now is sifting through the overwhelming amount of content we come across on a daily basis to find what is most interesting and relevant.

Rob Pegoraro of the Washington Post writes:

The company hasn’t said anything specific about the pricing of this bring-your-own-device service and doesn’t plan to until early next year. But McAdam did say that it would offer “very different” pricing for low-bandwidth devices like utility meters.

During the teleconference, Verizon Wireless executives also said that any phone running Google’s Android software would be welcome under this system, as long as it runs on the CDMA standard Verizon and Sprint use. For the same reason, any Sprint phone that passed Verizon’s compatibility testing would also pass muster — but the iPhone, which only works on GSM systems such as AT&T, could not.
