Al Sacco from CIO Magazine writes,
Even IT leaders who are not gadget lovers had better understand the implications of Google’s recently unveiled “gPhone”—which turns out not to be one phone but a software platform called Android. And Google hopes it will power many, many phones.
“If CIOs are not planning for mobility now, they better start,” says Bill Hughes, principal analyst with market research firm In-Stat.

IT Management - Why Android is Important to IT Managers
November 14th, 2007 by Head RobotThe IT Managment Blog writes about 5 ways Android is Important to IT Managers:
Although it’s something we don’t hear too much about, Android is important in the world of IT, and of particular importance to IT Managers. The open source mobile platform that was acquired by Google two years ago certainly has its place, and the recently announced contest doesn’t hurt.
Recently, Lisa Hoover from the IT Manager’s Journal detailed five reasons why IT managers should pay attention to Android:
1) Using computer software with open source code can be enough of a minefield. Android Community’s Chris Davies says, “By adopting Linux and (eventually) opening the SDK up to any interested party, Android runs the risk of causing paranoid admins - amid cautions of potentially malicious softwarefrom security firm F-Secure - to slam shut the doors, fearing the possibility of malware being easily introduced to the ecosystem.” Security expert McAfee, on the other hand, says its not worried since open source products already have a high rate of success when it comes to coding secure software.
2) Expect CIOs to equate an open source platform and APIs with custom mobile applications. According to InformationWeek columnist Richard Martin, “…because Android is open source, companies will be free to adapt it to their own needs, and develop customized in-house applications of their own.” If management decides they want a custom app, it could be up to the IT department to make it happen.
